Taieri Times Report 2 August 2017

After a two-week hiatus, in the aftermath of the weather bomb that hit Mosgiel and the Taieri, the winter programme resumed with a run/walk from the Finnie’s residence in Abbotsford. The hosts for the day, Janice and Richard, raised a few eyebrows, suggesting the runners head to Tunnel Beach.

So, it turned out to be, the faster and medium group headed through Green Island, up Short Street to Lookout Point, through to Corstorphine, then along the hill top, and down the track to the Beach. Their efforts were rewarded with a low tide view of the rugged coastline, before they ascended the steady climb up the track, returning home via Church Road covering 14.5 kms within the 1 hour 40 minutes running time. Richard and Janice, along with Sharon Findlay, Wendy Paterson, Ruth Fahey and Mike Dooley, made up this group. The more medium pacers, Pam Wyber, Jan Day, Lyn Mackay, Marjorie Orr, and Tom Cockerill were joined by

Tarryn Fahey, who was on her first outing with the Taieri club, followed the faster runners, but opted not to tackle the beach track, they returned to Abbotsford via Green Island, satisfied with a 90-minute effort.

The walkers, fast and slow, combined to take in the new subdivisions in the suburb, before heading through the Green Island business area towards Burnside, before returning to base, in just over 80 minutes. Prominent in the walkers, were Karen Muir, Kathy Batten, Angie Low who was having a day off running, and Lorna Issac. The change of scenery was welcomed by both the runners and walkers, who were rapt to be back exercising as a group, after the weather trials of last week. The cancellation was a rare occurrence in the club’s history, as Harriers usually run wet or fine!
